Money, Money, Money, Money

Income is subject that's not often talked about by writers.
John Scalzi does so rather in depth on his blog.
Its a pretty interesting breakdown.

Read the post here.

So a pretty successful author brings in a comfortable income. Of course that's with effectively 3 novels bringing in income for the year. But its taken him a number of years to reach this level.

A point about Scalzi's earnings (if you've read his previous entries in about this) is that writing science fiction as an author is a very small part of what he makes from writing. The bulk of his "writing" income comes from commissioned work, specifically corporate writing.

So, yeah, he's had a very successful year from science fiction, but he can't live off of his SF income..well, maybe this year's income.

Joe, yeah its the rare genre author who makes a complete living off of their writing. Its to bad its like that. Especially when so many very talented authors just never make it to even the modest level of commercial success that Mr. Scalzi has achieved.

Some very interesting numbers there. I'm glad that a man like Scalzi exists because he gives it to everyone straight. I've seen a ton of authors just push this topic away with vague statements about you can never make a living as an author.

It's finally nice to see some monetary facts.

I didn't really cover income on my recent post. But I think my first 60 days of being a published author is worth a glance, nonetheless. If any other new authors are interested... visit here. www.adventurefaith.blogspot.com
